An Application Protocol Data Unit (APDU) typically comprises an ASDU along with application protocol control information. However, when communicating using the IEC 60870-5-101 or IEC 60870-5-104 protocol, no application protocol control information is required, and therefore the ASDU and APDU are one and the same.
