User Accounts for System Users
To restrict access to the system, you can create user accounts and allocate them to the system users. Each user account has its own user name and password, which are used to restrict access to the system—only users that have the correct user name and password can log on via a user account. Users that are unable to log on to the system via a user account can only use the Guest user account (see Guest User Account).
NOTE: The Guest User Account is available on ViewX clients and is also used as the default access for automation and third-party applications.
ClearSCADA user accounts can also be associated with Windows User Profiles. This allows network administrators to manage ClearSCADA user accounts by making changes to the corresponding Windows User Profiles. For example, a network administrator can disable a Windows User Profile and this will disable the corresponding ClearSCADA user account. For information see Using Windows User Authentication with ClearSCADA.
Every database item has its own security settings that allow you to define access permissions for each of the user accounts. A user can only access an item's features if the item's security settings grant the relevant permissions to their user account. For example, if a user account is set up to only have the Read and Browse permissions, the user that logs on via that account will only be able to look at information in the system; they will not have the permissions to operate or configure any of the system items.
In ViewX and WebX, additional restrictions can be enforced by configuring the individual user accounts. By configuring a user account, you can deny access to specific ViewX and WebX features irrespective of the security settings for individual items. For example, a user account can be configured to deny access to the configuration features in ViewX—the user of the account will be unable to access any configuration features, even if their user account has been allocated the Configure permission for an item.
In ViewX or WebX, you can only access a feature for an item if you are logged on via a user account that provides access to the feature and has the relevant permission for the required item.
NOTE: ClearSCADA user accounts can also be associated with Windows User Profiles (see Using Windows User Authentication with ClearSCADA).
