Define the Number of Characters Permitted in an Extra Field
If you are adding or modifying a Standard type of custom field or a Search Key type of custom field, you can use the Size setting to define the number of characters that are permitted for the field. With Search Key fields, the Size setting determines the number of characters that are included when data is returned via ODBC.
To define the number of characters permitted in an extra field, you need to use the Edit Field window (see Add a New Extra Field or see Modify an Existing Extra Field).
When you have displayed the Edit Field window, you can define the number of permitted characters by using the Size setting:
- Size—Use the Size spin box to define the number of characters that are:
- Permitted in the standard field
Or:
- Can be returned for the search key field when the data is returned via ODBC. When ClearSCADA returns the search key field (in a Query etc.), it does not truncate any data that it cannot fit into the field. However, data that is returned via ODBC is truncated—the data that it cannot fit into the field is lost.
NOTE: The Size setting is only available for Standard and Search Key fields.
- Permitted in the standard field
When you have defined the Size, you can continue to define the other field settings as required.
