INOPERABLE DEVICE
If power is lost while the Field Device is applying the firmware, the Field Device may be left in an inoperable state. If this occurs, an engineer will need to resolve the situation locally at the Field Device.
Only attempt to download firmware when there is sufficient time to manually recover the Field Device.
You can configure a WITS Outstation item so that it is associated with a Firmware Image item, which contains a firmware update file. You can then download the firmware update file to the Field Device (represented by the Outstation), by using the Download Firmware action.
NOTE: The Download Firmware action is only available for Field Devices that support firmware download. The Device Profile for your Field Device indicates whether firmware download is supported (see Display a WITS Device Profile).
When you have used the Download Firmware action, you can check that the download was successful by displaying the View Status dialog box for the Outstation. On the View Status dialog box, look at the Software Version attribute, which often shows the firmware version.
NOTE: You can also download firmware by using the DNP3 Download File pick action (see Download File in the ClearSCADA Guide to the DNP3 Driver).However, if you use Download File, you will need to enter the correct filename for the destination file (the correct filename can be found in the WITS Device Profile).You do not need to create a firmware image item for this type of download, and so it is more suitable for an 'ad hoc' download.
